    Next Generation Products (NGP) is part of British American Tobacco Group, focused on developing and delivering high quality nicotine alternatives to adult smokers in the key areas of Vapour and Tobacco Heating Products. In NGPs, our aim is to provide consumers with a compelling range of inspiring products that drive change. This means developing products that meet consumer needs and, by driving change, will reduce the public health impact of tobacco.

    The responsibility of this role is to lead the continuous improvement of THP devices to improve product quality and reduce product cost.


    Duties and Responsibilities

    Your main responsibilities in this role include the following:

    • Lead the ongoing development and testing of NGP vapour device electronic test solutions to reduce product cost and / or address product quality / performance issues

    • Determine verification test requirements and devise appropriate test plans and equipment

    • Lead R&D continuous improvement projects:

      1. Briefing device electronics development to external partners

      2. Project manage initiatives ensuring progress to plan / budget

      3. Facilitate design reviews and manage relevant stage gate documentation

      4. Communicate project status to stakeholders and Senior Management

      5. Support commercialization stage

    • Conduct root cause analysis into device quality issues and product returns

    • Review and manage device engineering documentation including engineering drawings, test reports and technical manuals

    • Develop and run test procedures andlead the development of design verification tests to ensure that new electronics designs are robust and will prove reliable in the field

    • Create small scale, bespoke test solutions, including test kit, software, technical documentation and user guide

    • To work effectively as part of a cross functional team including internal and key external partnerships critical in the delivery of projects and initiatives

    • Ability to communicate in clear and simple terms and influence others to deliver against challenging objectives

    • Development work supported by objective evidence and validation

    • Creating automated test solutions including programming with simple user interface for cross-platform functionality and life testing

    • Identifying and predicting potential failure modes and causes, as well as developing mitigation approaches

    • Interpretation of data submitted for Management/Technical Review.

    • Base salary from £43,200 to £54,000 per year, depending of relevant experience

    Job Requirements

    • Equivalent to Electronics Engineering based degree

    • Electronics test design experience to analyse component, PCB and system performance, stability under stress and early failure modes

    • Can analyse electrical and comms performance across process, voltage and temperature variations

    • Experience in writing and debugging test software and IC firmware for similar hand-held electronics devices

    • Understands EMC and other safety & compliance requirements

    • Understands electronic design and assembly and can develop functional and stress tests to identify infant mortality failure modes

    • Knowledge and experience of PCB design and chipset selection for BTooth and Wi-Fi applications and products

    • Excellent problem solving skills and experience in using a variety of fault finding techniques

    • Good overall communication skills including report writing and presentations

    • Good leadership skills and an ability to produce clear and simple plans

    Desired Skills

    • Experience working with far eastern suppliers and manufacturers for the mass production of lowest cost of goods PCB’s and systems

    • Ability to use a PCB CAD package, making recommendations for design improvements

    • Antenna/device/system design to meet international type approval regulations

    • An understanding of consumer electronics technology roadmaps/evolution and proposing and designing for future trends and technologies that are relevant to our consumers and markets

    • Experience of managing and sourcing the rapid prototyping of PCB’s, either locally or from the far east, especially during the early development phases

    • Knowledge of battery technologies, specifications and performance. Able to test and select batteries for use in Vapour devices and appropriate safety circuits
