    Next Generation Products (NGP) is part of British American Tobacco Group, focused on developing and delivering high quality nicotine alternatives to adult smokers in the key areas of Vapour and Tobacco Heating Products. In NGPs, our aim is to provide consumers with a compelling range of inspiring products that drive change. This means developing products that meet consumer needs and, by driving change, will reduce the public health impact of tobacco.

    The responsibility of this role is to lead the continuous improvement of THP devices to improve product quality and reduce product cost.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Your main responsibilities in this role include the following:

    • Lead the development and testing of THP device electronic design solutions to reduce product cost and / or address product quality / performance issues

    • Determine verification test requirements and devise appropriate test plans

    • Lead R&D continuous improvement projects

    • Briefing device electronics development to external partners

    • Project manage initiatives ensuring progress to plan / budget

    • Facilitate design reviews and manage relevant stage gate documentation

    • Communicate project status to stakeholders and Senior Management

    • Support commercialization stage

    • Conduct root cause analysis into device quality issues and product returns

    • Review and manage device engineering documentation including engineering drawings, test reports and technical manuals

    • Lead the development of design verification tests to ensure that new electronics designs are robust and will prove reliable in the field

    • To work effectively as part of a cross functional team including internal and key external partnerships critical in the delivery of projects and initiatives

    • Ability to communicate in clear and simple terms and influence others to deliver against challenging objectives

    • Key representative in engineering solutions for innovative materials/products with internal stakeholders and cross functional teams

    • Key representative in interactions with external suppliers on electronics engineering solutions

    • Write technical reports and presentations for internal communication, as well as conferences and industry working groups

    • Development work supported by objective evidence and validation

    • Identification of new approaches and technology applications

    • Identifying and predicting potential failure modes and causes, as well as developing mitigation approaches

    • Interpretation of data submitted for Management/Technical Review

    • Base salary from £43,200 to £54,000 per year, depending of relevant experience

    Job Requirements

    • Experienced in optimizing complicated circuits to achieve safe operation, power reduction, competent in power supply design and familiar with most topologies

    • An excellent understanding of PCB and component costs, and designing for the lowest possible cost of goods

    • Can analyse performance across process, voltage and temperature variations

    • Can devise hardware architecture to meet requirements using appropriate technology to meet cost targets

    • Experience in writing and debugging software/firmware for similar hand-held electronics devices

    • Knowledge of battery technologies, specifications and performance

    • Able to test and select batteries for use in THP devices and appropriate safety circuits

    • Understands best practice design for EMC and other safety & compliance requirements can resolve seemingly conflicting requirements or product issues

    • Understands electronic assembly failure modes and can develop investigatory techniques

    • Knowledge and experience of PCB design and chipset selection for BT and WiFi applications and products

    • Excellent problem solving skills and experience in using a variety of fault finding techniques

    • Good overall communication skills including report writing and presentations

    • Good leadership skills and an ability to produce clear and simple plans

    Desired Skills

    • Ability to create end-to-end PCB designs in a suitable PCB CAD packages (i.e. Altium or similar), including placement and layouts and knowledge of the process of transferring these into a mechanical CAD package and design team

    • Experience working with far eastern suppliers and manufacturers for the mass production of lowest cost of goods PCB’s and systems

    • Ability to manage any PCB CAD software package, making recommendations for process and setup improvements

    • Antenna/device/system design to meet international type approval regulations

    • An understanding of consumer electronics technology roadmaps/evolution and proposing and designing for future trends and technologies that are relevant to our consumers and markets

    • Experience of managing and sourcing the rapid prototyping of PCB’s, either locally or from the far east, especially during the early development phases
