    Development Coordination Intern (multiple positions)

    The Resident Coordinator (RC) system encompasses all organizations of the United Nations system dealing with operational activities for development, regardless of their formal presence in the country. The RC system in Kuwait aims to bring together the different UN agencies to contribute to the realization of New Kuwait Vision 2035 by aligning results to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the country level. The RC leads the UN Country Team (UNCT) and is the designated representatives of the Secretary-General for development operations. Working closely in partnership with Kuwait governments, the RC and country team advocate the interests and mandates of the UN drawing on the support and guidance of the entire UN family.

    The internship is for six months at maximum and UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the direct supervision of the Head of the Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) and will be under the overall supervision of the RC.

    We recruit interns throughout the year for assignments of at least 3 - 6 months. In your cover note, please indicate when you would like to start your internship.

    • Fall (September to December)

    • Winter/Spring (January to April)

    • Summer (May to August)

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Your main responsibilities in this role include the following:

    • Provides inputs on evidence-based SDG analysis in support of a shared understanding by the UNCT of sustainable development challenges and opportunities, with particular focus on the four areas of the UNCT’s COVID-19 response plan, including (1) socioeconomic resilience, (2) protection of vulnerable, (3) education and continuous learning and (4) health and wellbeing;

    • Provides inputs on socioeconomic trends to inform system-wide planning efforts that the SCF 2020-2025 and the UNCT Common Country Assessment (CCA) are revised to respond to the potential impact and new risks originated from the twin crisis, including COVID-19 and the fluctuation of global oil prices;

    • Supports identification, analysis and prioritization of joint programmes of UN entities in line with the UNSCF 2020-2025 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

    • Supports drafting of inputs to presentations and project documents as well as assists in the organization of meetings;

    • Performs other duties assigned.


    Job Requirements

    • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

      • be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

      • be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

      • have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

    • Be computer literate in standard software applications;

    • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the UN and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

    • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    • Work Experience: Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Nonetheless, experience in sustainable development or related area would be an advantage.

    • Languages: English and French are the working languages of the UN. Arabic is also a working language of the RCO. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
