Job Description
The Freight Agent at Southwest Airlines is responsible for providing legendary customer service by handling the processing of all cargo shipments. The job involves maintaining positive relationships with internal and external customers, working in a cooperative spirit, and working in air freight facilities. The position may be exposed to various weather conditions, noise, and fumes. The Freight Agent handles station AMS and radio communications traffic, checks cargo information for each flight, and answers cargo facility telephones. They resolve customer situations by providing positive service, writing irregularity reports, and checking cargo on hand.
Responsibilities include greeting customers politely, re-manifesting cargo due to weight restrictions, delayed or cancelled flights, lost, delayed, or damaged shipments, conducting Federally Mandated screening, handling cash, checks, credit cards, and coupons, calculating charges, making change, and balancing daily transactions. They also handle any aspect of processing a cargo shipment by operating a computerized point-of-sale system and resolving related complaints and problems.
The Freight Agent maintains a neat and professional appearance, provides friendly service to co-workers and customers, and performs special tasks as delegated by supervisors or station management personnel. They may also perform the duties of an Operations Agent and may be required to meet physical ability requirements.

Job Requirements
The job requirements include a high school diploma or GED, college coursework or degree, two years of airline/military related work experience in ramp/operations/provisioning functions, obtaining a SIDA badge, a valid state motor vehicle operator's license, and USPS clearance.
The candidate must be able to lift and move items of 70 pounds or more, climb, bend, kneel, and stand frequently, carry heavy items up and down jetway stairs, distinguish colors on screening equipment, hear and respond to spoken voice and audible alarms, wear prescribed uniforms, work well with others, and work under stressful situations.
Freight Agents must obtain and maintain GSC qualification, comply with DOT drug and alcohol testing program, read documents, follow instructions, and understand ramp operations procedures.
Freight Agents must also be able to type and use a computer keyboard with sufficient speed to meet job demands.
The candidate must be aware of hazardous situations and handle emergencies as needed, work under pressure, and work under tight time constraints.
They must possess good written and oral skills, effectively communicate verbally, be alert to moving vehicles or aircraft, and communicate information and instructions verbally or via radio equipment. Other qualifications include maintaining a well-groomed appearance, being a U.S. citizen, being at least 18 years old, complying with company attendance standards, working shift work and overtime, and reading, speaking, and writing English. Foreign language skills are desirable but not required.
